When a large chunk of young voters is disappointed with the political leadership and the performance of their local MPs, it is so refreshing to read about Sikkim’s lone Member of Parliament, Prem Das Rai who despite having lucrative jobs and secured future decided to serve people through politics.
For those who say there is no place for gentlemen in Indian politics and only a Mafias or Gundas can survive, Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) MP, Rai has the distinction of being the first and only members of Parliament with degrees from both IIT and IIM after being elected to the Lok Sabha from the Sikkim constituency in 2009.
He did his chemical engineering from IIT, Kanpur in 1976 and his Post-Graduation in Management (MBA), in 1978, from IIM, Ahmedabad.

Rai is popular among his people and working hard to bring development in the state of Sikkim. For the same reason, he was re-elected as MP in 2014 and experts believe that he would again register an easy win in 2019 Lok Sabha election.
As per the reports, he is credited with bringing the first computers into Sikkim, and set up an email service in the region which was used as a Bulletin Board Service between Gangtok and Kolkata before Internet services were widely available in the region.
Rai is currently a Member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Subordinate Legislation, and the Parliamentary Consultative Committee on Tribal Affairs & DoNER Ministry.
Along with his father, he edited the popular weekly, the Gangtok Times, for a decade between 1994 and 2004. He also serves as the editor of the Political & Economic Journal of Sikkim.
